Autumn 2015 | News from Lhotse South Face - Koreans Set for Summit-bid
All but one post-monsoon climbing teams on 8000ers have returned home. We learned about arrival of Korean team, led by Seong-Taek Hong, at Lhotse South Face Base Camp at the start of October. The team is still at Base Camp and are all set for summit push starting this weekend.
Kyu Dam Lee, Exweb contributor and a friend from South Korea, relayed following information about the expedition.
“This afternoon, I received an e-mail from Mr. Seong-Taek Hong. He said that he is in BC now (on Oct 31, 2015) after establishing route to C-3. He along with other members reached C-3 at 7,700 m on Oct 29, 2015. Soon he will move to C-3 again, to resume his ascent.
After establishing BC on Oct 05, 2015, he set up C-1 on Oct 08, 2015, C-2 on Oct 25, 2015, and C-3 on Oct 29, 2015. He wrote that it was very lengthy but important part for his expedition. He climbed in night to avoid rock-fall and avalanches. Low temperatures and 1,300 m vertical gain (from C-1 to C-2) and hang over at such high attitude made route fixing very difficult.
However, after finding route to C-3, they fixed a rope and Mr. Hong came down to BC for rest.
Mr. Seong-Tack Hong says that weather is pretty clear and just 6 inches snow fell in recent days.
Mr. Seong-Taek Hong and his members are now planning to reach C-4 at 8,100 m on Nov-07-2015, and hope to reach summit on Nov-12-2015.”
